When I wrote this, I am sorry to say, I was fairly deep in the throes of an R.E.M. obsession that lasted several years. Jeb was very accommodating of my many "arty" pecadillos during what I'm sure must have been a frustrating time.
After we worked out the initial structure, we visited the apartment of an acquaintance who was a little older (in college) for lyrical inspiration. He dragged out Blake's "The Tyger," among other things, and suggested using a chess metaphor for this song. That was too arty even for me, and in the end we decided to leave it as an instrumental. The title is a tip of the hat to our guru.
